When you say the phrase “over the summer” it means “during summer”?
Hi,
Yes,“over” means “during”.However,“during” is more precise than “over”
Regards,
Morteza
Sorry, Morteza, but I don’t find ‘during’ any more precise than ‘over’. Here, both mean ‘in the course of’.
Can you tell me what the difference is here if i use in instead of during?
None that I can think of offhand. Depending on context, all the permutations can refer to a specific or non-specific summer and can refer to a part or all of said summer.
If I had a whole sentence, I would write it. I found this sentence in an English book (which helps students write compositions) and it says as a header. Time of the year. and below is the example
over the summber/holidays…
Then, yes-- as it stands, it means ‘during the summer/holidays’.
thank you
