- The other boy is playing well.
- The others boys are playing well.
- The other came and kicked him.
- The others came and kicked him.
Please correct the above sentences and comment on them.
3 is incorrect. If you are speaking about one other then it needs more definition:
The other boy/one came and kicked him.
Hi, Beeesneees!
2. The others boys are playing well.
Is the sentence above is correct?
I think, either
(a) The other boys are ... or
(b) The others are... is grammatically correct.
How can we combine others with boys? Is it correct?
Ah, sorry.
2 is also incorrect.
In my haste I misread it - my eye saw what my brain told it should be there, rather than what was there.
The other boys are playing well.
The others are playing well.
The other boy came and kicked him.
The others came and kicked him.
Beeesneees,
- The other(adjective) boy came and kicked him.
- The others(pronoun) came and kicked him.
So ‘others’ is a pronoun, while ‘other’ is an adjective.
That is OK.
But ‘other’ is also a pronoun.
How is ‘The other came and kicked him.’ wrong?
Please explain.
Can we add the definite article - ‘the’ before the indefinite pronoun?
Expecting your early reply. Thanks.
If you say ‘the other’, you need to have mentioned who that other person was before as in: There were two brothers in the race. One of them ran faster than the other. This is possible because you have mentioned two bothers in advance and it is clear that you are talking about ‘the other’ as the other brother ( of the two).
