“Open” is the natural option.
Hi Mordant,
To the extend I can get your answer:
The door was wide open. (You didn’t know what the reason was.)
So, opened would be the right word.
Like:
I keep my supermarket opened till midnight.
Am I right?
Richard, arguably “opened” can be used in many cases where “open” can. Participles frequently act as adjectives. However, native speakers rarely use “opened” this way.
When “open” means “in operation,” “open” is definitely the right option. “The supermarket is opened” is awkward and doesn’t necessarily mean it’s in operation at the moment.
In the first example, my knowledge of the reason is irrelevant. “Opened” would fit better there than in the supermarket example; however, it is still unlikely.
