One step too far

Could you please tell me what does “one step too far” mean in Dido song?
Here’s full lyrics: artists.letssingit.com/faithless … do-kw9lhcj

I understand what “go one step too far” means, but still can’t understand this phrase without “go” :frowning:

“one step too far” is the place/situation that is reached when someone “goes one step too far”.

Thanks for your help! I have 2 more questions!

  1. What is the meaning of “only with mellow”?
Only with mellow, are you thin enough to slide through.
If the sun or the moon should give way to doubt, they would immediately go out.
One swallow don’t make a summer, but tomorrow has to start somewhere.

  2. What is the meaning of “whine to the bone”?
You can whine to the bone but still you won’t be full

Those are vague and (being generous) impressionistic lines, and neither makes any definite sense to me.

“to the bone” is used in some expressions to mean “to an extreme/painful degree”. I suppose the “only with mellow” thing could be saying that you need to be mellow to get by in life / to get through problems, but it is not at all clear.

Ok… Thank you

And the last question about this strange lyrics…

“Go out” - is it sunrise or sunset? (If we’re talking about the Sun, figuratively), can’t understand the expression.

In this case “go out” means “stop shining”.
