Could anyone tell me what this proverb means?
Hi,
This sort of expression simply means if you have a reputation for being a drunkard ( a heavy drinker), you will remain a drunkard. Consider: Once a thief/liar, always a thief/liar.

Hi Alan,
I agree with you, but it doesn’t have to be necessarily true forever, does it? I would say that if you’ve been sober for many years and suddenly you relapse and start drinking again, then people are likely to start using that expression (again). However narrow minded people will always use the expression, even though you don’t remain a drunkard.
I would also like to change your explanation: If you have the reputation for being a drunkard (or alcoholic), people will always consider you an alcoholic. I’m sorry, in my opinion the choice of ‘remain’ was a little bit wrong. You see, I know many people who were once addicted to alcohol and now they don’t use a drop of alcohol anymore.
Yet, a proverb is just what it is: a proverb! People can change and as you know, ‘change is the only constance in life’. I can’t quite remember which philosopher said that, sorry!

Thank you so much.
Hi Detlef,
I merely explained the expression. I wasn’t necessarily endorsing it.
Alan
Thanks Alan,
I know what you mean, but I just wanted to say this, since a lot of members log on to this forum. So, on my part, it was merely some information in order to be social with other people, who might or might not be addicted.
Many people, in particular youngsters, are addicted to alcohol nowadays (I’m sure you’ve heard of binge drinking). I just wanted to give more information in connection with the danger of alcohol.
Kind regards
Detlef
Hi Detlef,
Just on a point of information and also to explain to other users, the expression is ‘binge drinking’ and that means drinking to excess just for the ‘pleasure’ of getting drunk.
Alan
Thanks Alan! As you can see, I’ve corrected my mistake. Also thanks for the link! I’m going to read it.
Detlef.
What would life be without you?
