Mr Andrew Chong, 48, who works in the insurance industry, told The Straits Times that he was having dinner in the church compound when he saw smoke coming out of a taxi’s bonnet in the road beside the church.

Is “in” the correct preposition for the phrase “in the road”?

Mr. Andrew Chong, 48, who works in the insurance industry, told The Straits Times that he was having dinner at the church compound when he saw smoke coming from the hood of a taxi on the road beside the church.

The correct preposition, in my view, is on. So, it should be ‘on the road’.
