On/ In

Hi Everyone,

I always have a problem about using On/In with regards to the word INTERNET.

is it on the Internet or in the Internet?

I got the information ___________________.

Please help me.

Thank you in Advance.

“in the Internet” is wrong. I would say:

“I got the information from the Internet.”
“I found the information on the Internet.”

I got the information on the internet. here, we need to realise that ‘the Internet’ is a SURFACE.

Other surfaces…:
Table, wall, face, hand.

If the noun (Internet, in this case) is instead an ENCLOSED SPACE then we use ‘in’.

Examples…:
Spain, Germany, Berlin, shed, purse.

And generally, if the noun refers to a SPECIFIC LOCATION, we use ‘at’.

Examples…:
House, edge of a table, corner of your eye.

I’m sure you knew most of this anyway, but I thought I’d include it just to reinforce your knowledge :). Hope I helped.

EDIT: this is explained on englishclub.com/grammar/prep … -place.htm , great site!

Thank you so much… Now I know that the Internet is a surface.

The Internet isn’t a surface.
It’s just treated in the same way as a surface would be when we use the term ‘on’.

Actually, the Internet is basically the connection of millions of webservers, and webservers are just platforms for websites (in addition to other types of applications). As such, I would call it a surface. I SUPPOSE, if we’re being pedantic, it’s a conceptual surface… However, a surface is still a surface. I suppose it depends on your viewpoint ^^.

I think it was probably best to clarify the difference between a physical surface and a conceptual surface in this instance.

Fair play, my mistake.

Thank you so much for helping me. :0
