Someone, mostly higher in rank and experience, who is assisting and promoting someone else is called a mentor.
How would you call the one who is being assisted and promoted?

Is there a word like “mentee”? 
Mentee might be a good choice. The word exists although it’s rarely used. In your particular case, however, it makes sense because you are creating an online community which often has its own terminology.[YSaerTTEW443543]
