meaning of "steeped in the lore of"

Hi,

I’ve come across this sentence and can’t make heads of tails of it:

Our coach is steeped in the lore of football.

Does it mean that the coach knows a lot of the lore of football, or that there are numerous mentions of the coach in the lore of football? Or something else altogether.

to be ‘steeped in’ something indicates that it has so permeated him that it is almost a part of him. He is saturated with knowledge about football.
