Hi Enrique
Could you give us the rest of the sentence that you found that phrase in?
.
Hi, Amy
I wonder why you requested the context I thought that “skip” means “leave” when speaking about places ?
(Like they skipped town)
Or perhaps you had another option in mind ?
Hi Alex
It could also mean ‘omit’ or ‘leave out’, for example.
.
Hi, Amy and Alex:
I found this expression in two sentences:
1.‘The sandman has decided to skip my place tonight…’
2.‘I called 911 and my family that was on their way to my house and let them know to skip my place and just meet me at the ER’
Thanks again,
Enrique
Hi Enrique
In your first sentence, the speaker seems to be saying that he is finding it impossible to go to sleep. In case you don’t know who the sandman is, click here. The word ‘skip’ means ‘omit’ or ‘bypass’, and ‘my place’ basically means ‘my house’ (i.e. the place where I live). So, ‘skip my place’ means ‘not come to my house’.
In your second sentence, ‘skip my place’ means basically the same thing:
Don’t go to my house. Instead you should go directly to the hospital and meet me at the Emergency Room.
.
Dear Amy:
Thank you very much for your useful explanations. I enjoyed a lot the reference to The Sandman. Learning a new language is not just to speak or pronounce words well, but to learn about its myths too.
Thank you again,
Enrique
