Can you please help me make sense of the following sentence? What does ‘many hedge fund managers are short’ mean? Should it read ‘are shorting’ instead?

That is why many hedge fund managers are short many carmakers in China, including the stronger domestic ones such as Geely Automobile, Guangzhou Automobile, Dongfeng Motor, and those with joint ventures including American carmakers such as General Motors, the Germans, and the Japanese such as Toyota and Honda.

Yes, exactly. They have borrowed shares in those companies in expectation that the share price will go down.

A bit vague really as it could suggest they are not tall!!

Just to clarify, there is a mistake in that sentence, it should read ‘are shorting’ or’ short selling’ and not ‘are short’?
