make vs. do estimation

Hi, everybody !

Could you tell me what collocation is possible: to make estimation or to do estimation or what?

Thanks !

We can ‘make an estimation’.

Hi LS

make/do an estimation

My feeling is that both are possible and I wouldn’t say one is better than or much more common than the other.

The meanings would be basically the same, but you might say there is a subtle difference as follows:
If you use ‘make’, the focus is more on the estimation itself.
If you use ‘do’ the focus is more on the work involved.

.
The first thought I had is that the usual phrase is do/make an estimate– but perhaps this is a different situation?

Hi, Amy and Conchita !
Thank you for your help !

Hi, Mister Micawber !

The situation is as follows:
I needed to prompt one of the employees of the company I work for, to estimate the time he would need to accomplish some task.
What would you advice me to use - do/make an estimation or estimate ?

Thanks !

Hi LS

I doubt that I’d use make or do at all. I’d probably ask him this:

Can you provide me with/give me an estimate?
How long do you estimate it will take?

.
Yes, I like Amy’s.

Hi, we often use the phare “do/make/review an/the estimate” in the Software project management to guess/evaluate the size/total effort of every project.
You may refer to dictionary.cambridge.org/def … &dict=CALD for definition of [estimate] and [estimation]. Hope it could help! ;-).
