Hi, I have come across this word: luncheon. What is the difference between lunch and luncheon? Thank you
It’s the same word - lunch is an abbreviation of luncheon. The more common/popular of the two is lunch.
Alan, thank you for the answer.
Alan, on very formal occasions involving VIPs the word ‘luncheon’ is often found preferred. So is, of course, ‘banquet’. Any significance or only preference?

Yes, “luncheon” is often used for a noon meal that is also an event, such as a meeting, entertainment or a tribute to someone.
You’re unlikely to acknowledge this because it comes from me, but generally
luncheon - midday
banquet - evening.
A luncheon is a lighter meal than a banquet.
