lights were strung

Hello everyone
I’d like to ask about the meaning of “were strung” in the following passage.

Sprawling homes stood north of the station, yards sprinkled with tall poles. Gas-jet lights were strung high overhead – a cheat to bring light to a place without sunshine.

Does the phrase simply mean that these gas-jet lights were set/mounted high on the poles?

Hi KLPNO

I really don’t know exactly what a “gas-jet light” is, but to me it sounds as though there was some sort of wire going from pole to pole, and there were lots of lights attached to/hanging from the wire between each pole.

Hi Amy
Thank you very much.
