left massive damage / did terrible damage

Hello my name is Kumiko and I teach English at a clam school. One of my students took this mock exam at school and the question was like this.

Choose one that is most appropriate for the sentense from below:

The hurricane hit our town and ( ) to it.
(a) gave a great damage
(b) left massive damage
© did terrible damage
(d) provided a critical damage

…and the correct answer is ©. They explain that for the word “damage” you could only use “do” or “did”. But I think (b) is also correct. Could someone give me a good explanation on this ?
Thanks in advance.

Only © is correct.

a is incorrect because ‘gave’ is the wrong verb and ‘damage’ is uncountable so the article is not needed.
b is incorrect because you don’t ‘leave damage’ - the act of damaging something is something you do,perform, etc. Compare it with:
The hurricane hit our town and left massive disruption because of the damage.
which is a possible sentence (note the spelling of ‘sentence’).
d is incorrect because ‘provide’ is the wrong verb and ‘damage’ is uncountable.

Hi Beeesneees

Thanks for your reply !
It is kind of difficult for us to pick right verb for righ word but it became perfectly clear.

Thanks again, that was very helpful.

Kumiko

Also, note that you teach in a cram school, Kumiko (unless your students are molluscs).
