Shouldn’t the following phrase have the article ‘the’ before ‘US government’?

Probably, but it’s very informal. I could see someone saying it that way. (Interesting that I can see a sound )
The land is now owned by the US government.
I assume this is about some kind of flood control, like the TVA or something similar.
