it means a lot to me

Can one say
[color=red]a. It discourages a poor kid if a rich kid gets all the attention at school.
b. It will discourage a poor kid if a rich kid gets all the attention at school.
?
Is there any difference between the meanings of (a) and (b)?

Can one say
[color=red]c. If you win, it means a lot to me.
d. If you win, it will mean a lot to me.
?

Is there any difference between the meanings of © and (d)?

Many thanks.

Hi Azz,

In (a) and © you indicate a fact by using the present simple. In (b) and (d) by using ‘will’ you indicate what is going to happen./

Thank you so much Alan.

Would you say that
[color=red]c. If you win, it means a lot to me.
means the same as
c1. When you win, it means a lot to me.
?

We are talking about something habitual here?

Many thanks.

‘When’ suggests - each time you win but ‘if’ indicates a condition - in a possible situation when you might win.

The nuance involved in the use of ‘when’ and ‘if’ is clearly brought out, Alan.
