Violent films and cartoons are intimidating and worrying parents, teachers and the whole society. Shockingly enough, our uncertainty of bad effects of violent related films, cartoons is as old as hills. Many a time has the debate been raised about whether “Tom and Jerry” is the most violent cartoon or not. While this cartoon has been under fire recently for fighting involved sets, I hold a firm belief that “Tom and Jerry” is by no means violence provoking. The reason for what I say is twofold.
{----------}
No matter what do the cat Tom and the mouse Jerry do in the film, children can tell fact and fiction apart with a little help of parents. Believe it or not, a child at the age of four can easily realize the distinction between Tom - Jerry and cats – mice in reality. They know that Tom and Jerry are just figments of imagination. To illustrate this, I used to watch Tom and Jerry with my dad. In fact, I use to watch a lot of movies with my parents. They taught me that what I was seeing on TV is not real, that the stuff in movies is not real, and that the cartoons are not real. As a child aged five or six, I had enough metal ability to tell that cutting tails or biting each other with and iron were just Tom and Jerry’s jokes, which could not be done by any of my pets. Generally speaking, what the characters in this cartoon do is not daunting and obsessive enough to have bad effects on children’s personality when considered today’s movies, which are fully equipped with effects that even lure the adult into thinking that these are real.

Indeed, what we can see in “Tom and Jerry” are not just meaningless fighting moments between cats and mice but many virtues as well. More than once has Jerry helped Top to get out of troubles, to find a girlfriend, to stand up against strange cats who have bullying actions. Parents and educators to teach children life’s virtues with this educational tool. We can ask them “do you think this action is nice?”, “should we help our friends when they are in the soup?”, “What should we do when our friends are bullied?” Rather than being a couch potato, the time the family spend watching Tom and Jerry is the opportunity that parents interact and guide their children. To wrap it up, rather than let our children sit and watch any movies or cartoon on their own, turn these moments into best memories between them and us, teach them how to treat others, how to behave well, share our experience and listen to what our children say.

For all mentioned, while cartoon violence in various degrees has been around since Mickey Mouse, Popeye, 3 Stooges, Superman, Looney Tunes, on and on, human beings have been violent since the very beginning of human kind on earth. We are all capable of one form of violence or another. Are cartoons to blame? It goes without saying that it is the person to blame not the cartoon. We are all responsible for our own actions. Violence in cartoons and in movies only serves to desensitize us from what real life is as a mere means of entertainment. Therefore, we can now jump into a conclusion that “Tom and Jerry” is nowhere near as violent as it seems.
