I’d do it this way:

  3. Which, ‘apt’ or ‘opt’, is the correct word in this sentence? (Which word, ‘apt’ or ‘opt’, is correct in this sentence?)
    (Note that the correlative 'either … ‘or’ cannot be used here. To me, when you have two things for mutual comparison, only positive and comparative degrees are considered to be standard. But in the first sentence the superlative is possible and acceptable since the comparison is deemed to be with all the other words in use/lexicons)
