Is the full stop before "I" necessary?

For example, if I said, "My wife and I were driving in the country and the car broke down in an isolated area. We could not call for help and had to walk five miles.” You might ask, “Didn’t you have a cell phone?”. I would respond, “This happened in 1975. There were no cell phones”. The last statement (about the year) is the context for the first statement (about the breakdown).

Is the full stop before “I” necessary?

Thanks.

Yes it’s necessary. The sentence is a statement, so the question mark will not suffice for end punctuation.

To me, it is not necessary.

A punctuation like a period, a question mark or an exclamation mark can be used to end a sentence with.

Pat said, “Where were you yesterday?”
Bob replied: “I was at home all day.”
