I learnt from an article that some people write an hotel instead a hotel, because they think the letter h in “hotel” is consonant.
I think most native speakers of English pronounce the H in hotel, and therefore they also use ‘a’.
I think only the (few) people who drop the H sound and pronounce the word hotel as o-tel would say “an hotel”.
