Is in production vs. has been in production

Can you please take a look at the following sentence:

Tesla Model S is an all electric sedan that is in production since 2012.

Why ‘is in production’ and not ‘has been in production’?

‘Is In production since 2012’ is anathema to me and surely ‘has been …’ must be the right tense. Alternatively - Is still in production and has been since 2012

Hi Alan, that’s exactly what I thought too but the phrase appeared on a high quality documentary made by a British company. That’s what actually surprised me.
