Is "expectancy" the same "expectation"?

Dear teachers.

Is “expectancy” the same “expectation”?
If not, Please tell me the difference.

Thanks a lot.

Hi mlngvt,

You asked:

Putting it simply expectancy is a state of expectation. An expectation is something which is anticipated or is likely to happen. Expectancy is being in that frame of mind/state of hopefulness where you anticipate what will happen. We can therefore say: She has every expectation that she will become a successful actor in future years. We can also say: In many countries life expectancy has improved considerably over the last 50 years.
