Reading passage:

In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day work week for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

My response:

The reading and the lecture discuss the advantages and disadvantages of hiring employees who wants to work a four-day week. The reading states that hiring four day employees would increase a company’s profits, improve economy of a country and make employees’ lives better. However, the lecturer casts doubt on each of these points made in the reading passage by providing several reasons.

To begin with, the reading passage mentions that by hiring a four day work employee, a company would only pay 80 percent of the normal pay. This would save a company a lot of money, and from this money, it can hire more workers. As a company would have more workers, it would increase its profit. However, the lecturer points out that if a company hired new employees with 80 percent of their normal pay rate, it would also pay for their medical insurance and work trainings. Furthermore, a company would need more office space and computers for them. All of these would increase the over all expenditure of a company. This seems to be a contradiction to the information pointed out in the reading passage.

In addition, the reading passage explains that hiring more employees who wants to work four days a week would reduce unemployment rate of a country. However, the lecturer asserts that hiring more employees is costly, and a compony can use other options rather than hiring the new one. It can ask other employees to work overtime. Thus, it would not improve an economy of a country. This challenges the assertion stated in the reading passage.

Last but not least, the reading passage states that working four days a week can make employee’s lives as they get more free time. However, the lecturer claims that this way would actually make employees’ lives unpleasant. A company can ask theses employees to finish their work in four days instead of five. This would increases their stress and responsibility. Moreover, more free time would create a job instability for these employees. Besides, a company would pass over the promotion to a five-day employee, and would consider the four day employees first to fire from job in time of recession. This disputes the point asserted in the reading passage.

Dear Luschen, Please check this integrated listening and reading task. This is my debut effort for this forum. Thanks a lot.

The reading paragraph states that converting (a 8 hour/day and a 4 day) work week to a 10 hr a day and 4 day work week is considered beneficial by companies and government agencies and provides three reasons for support. The professor considers it a ridiculous idea and refutes each of author’s reasons.
First, the reading paragraph states that this change would alleviate expenses for employees. But the professor refutes this idea by giving example of reduced gas expenses. He thinks that on average, every employer travels 30 miles away to go to work. Working for a day less will save him $15-$20 a week which turns out $850 year. The author contends this amount is not enough for a change like this.
Second, the reading paragraph claims that adding two hours a day would reduce the operating cost of business. The professor argues that in this way employers will lose 20%of their business because most consumers have already gone home by this time.
Third, the reading paragraph avers that due to this change, employees will be able to spend time with their families. The professor opposes this point by saying that people have to work ten hours a day in this way. Employees with younger kids will have to send them to day care for longer hours. The parents of older kids won’t be able to spend time with them because the kids will be at school for the first half of the fifth day.

Hi Jatkin, I thought you did a very good job with this one. You have an effective structure and have clearly communicated the main and most of the secondary points of the lecture. You do have a few minor grammar mistakes and errors in usage here and there though. Overall, I would rate this a 4.5 out of 5.

Hi Aiza, the lecture you are referring to seems to be completely different than the lecture posted above. Do you have a link to the lecture you are using?

Reading passage:
The passage says that the option of working four days a week benefits companies’ profits, country’s economy, and employees’ lives. However, the professor considers these arguments unconvincing.

Firstly, the passage says companies providing the option and adding employees working four days a week decrease overworked and error-prone employees, increasing companies’ profits with the same payroll as original. On the contrary, the speaker states the more employees that company hires which means more money will be spent on training, office position, medical benefits and even computers, actually the less profit that companies will earn.

Secondly, the passage states that by full time employees having shorter working hours, their workloads could shift to others hired, reducing unemployment rate. However, the professor argues that instead of paying more personnel expense, hirers turn into another option: asking employees to work overtime. Worse than that, he explains, the management’s expectation that four-day-workweek wage earners should be as efficient in working as normal five-day-workweek labor causes the paucity of new jobs.

Thirdly, the passage claims that the employees accepting a lower salary in exchange for more time with families and individual activities improve their quality of lives. However, a risk ignored by the passage, the professor argues, is that their job stabilities could weaken and chances for promotions lack, followed by losing jobs. He emphasizes that employers tend to employ as managers employees working five days a week, satisfying the need for work-weekly consistent coverage and supervision
