TOEIC short conversations: A radio news anchorman asks his colleague for a weather update[YSaerTTEW443543]

Hi guys.

It is great to be back working for English Team.

I would like to make an update on the Eilenburg Group.

First this group started this Monday (13th).
The group consists of 14 students.
The students vary from 25 to 59 years old.
There are 7 women and 5 men. 2 are currently absent.

The course level is (Beginners English)
The actual level of the students would be between basic level and no exposure to English.
4 of the men have basic (Holiday English) and the rest of the group have no real foundations in English.

For the first day in Eilenburg.
We went through the normal procedures of registration.
After that we began with simple introductions.
I started and introduced myself, English Team and a little about my background.
First in German and then in English.

Then the students were given simple questions about themselves.
They were helped through this process to fill out all the information.
They introduced themselves to the other students and explained why them were there and a little of their backgrounds.

The rest of the day was based around, explaining the platform of work and activities they would be doing for the next 2 months.
Also doing Q&A with the students and asking them, what they thought was important in English and about their previous experiences with speaking English.

This was a very successful first day.
Although the groups overall level is not high, the optimise and camaraderie is there and with the right work and teacher, this group can be a fantastic group for self motivation and synergy !

Day 2 in Eilenburg.

Today was another very successful day.
Although the weather was not great, the mood and atmospheres in the class room was surprisingly good.

We started today’s session with a small talk session about the students activities from the previous evening.
After that we created a large word list for the different activities that each student would do in their work and free time.
The word list consisted of almost 80 words and the students were given enough time to mark down German translations, when needed.

Then we did a small exercise in Subject Pronouns.
The Subject Pronouns were written on the black board and then the German translations were written on the right.
After the students had a very clear diagram of the Subject Pronouns, both in English and German, they began to construct simple sentences using their word list and the subject pronouns.
Then they created 1 sentence each, using the different Subject Pronouns. A typical example would have been. (I work in Leipzig.)

Then after this exercise, we started with basic Numbers.
The numbers from 1 to 20 were written on the board.
The students were asked to read though them individually for practice.

After this, the students used the numbers in conjunction with the Subject Pronouns to build 5 new sentences.
For example (I work for 5 hours.)

This very basic introduction of the Subject Pronouns and Numbers to the students was absolutely critical and necessary.
When they have these very simple tools, then the can do all types of activities.

And to finish the day, we had a very good game of Hangman with the students.

Overall today was very productive and progressive day.

Hello Ian,

Thank you very much for your excellent work. I look forward to meeting the group tomorrow.[YSaerTTEW443543]

TOEIC short conversations: A new hire gets briefed on the company’s sick and vacation policy[YSaerTTEW443543]

A quick update from the Wednesday session in Eilenburg.

Again the group was in very high spirits.

We began with a little small talk.
Discussing what the students had done the evening before.
Also about normal topics such as the weather etc.

We then revised the Subject Pronouns.
The Subject Pronouns were written down on the white board and each student was asked to give the English translation.
After that, the students were asked to create 6 new sentences using the subject pronouns.
These were read out aloud and then corrected.

I formally introduced the alphabet today.
4 of the students have a basic understanding of English but many of the other students lack even a simple idea of the alphabet.
So the alphabet was written down. For each letter, we wrote the word down underneath.
Then we gave each letter an example word. Example F - F.B.I.
We practiced this for a few minutes all together and then each student individually read out the alphabet.

I introduced the form of be.
After the students had a good idea of the Subject Pronouns, I Introduced the (be) to them.
Using the same style table as before. I gave them the (be) forms in conjunction with the subject pronouns. (Example, I am German)

The students then created 8 simple questions and asked their partner. They wrote down the answers and then finally gave a presentation about the other student.
This type of work really helps bond the students together and break down any personnel barriers very quickly.

To finish the day, we had a very good game of Hangman and did a little small talk about the students evening plans.

Again a very good day with a very nice group of students.

Hello Ian, Markus and Andreas,

Here is a rundown of what we have done for the past two days:

  • introductions
  • personal profiles
  • personal pronouns plus BE verb (review)
  • review of the alphabet, using the NATO alphabet
  • reading and translating this text: www.english-team.com/PDF/How_to_communi … nglish.pdf
  • listening comprehension: Hueber ‘Englisch Lernen Ohne Buch’
  • review of the possessive adjectives
  • review of the present simple
  • worksheet ‘Employment’, page 5

In the future, please stick to using the NATO alphabet. Do not use other words such as ‘b as in banana’ in order to avoid confusion. Use the international standard rather than other lists.

Also, please have the group spend at least 10 minutes every day spread throughout the day spell words to each other.

I look forward to meeting all of you in person on Tuesday afternoon.
Thanks,
Torsten[YSaerTTEW443543]

Hi Markus,

Please do the following:

  1. Introduce yourself in English mentioning the fact that you have been an English Team trainer since earlier this year.

  2. Print off the following worksheet and dictate the questions to the group. Once they have written down the questions, split them into pairs and have them interview each other. Give them about 20 minutes to ask and answer the questions in pairs, then have them present the answers to the group: www.english-team.com/PDF/Learners_Profile.pdf
As they give their reports, take notes so you can share the information with us later.

  3. Read with the group together the information in the Grammar Explanation worksheet on page 3 (simple present). Give additional explanation where necessary.

  4. Do the grammar exercises in the grammar worksheet, pages 6 to 10.

  5. Split them into small teams of 3 or four. Have each team brainstorm a list of German verbs they use on a daily basis (speak, work, think, pay, buy, etc.) This should take between 5 and 10 minutes. Afterwards go around and each team read one verb from their list. Translate the verb into English and put it on the whiteboard. Have everyone write down those verbs. Your list should contain between 30 and 50 of the most frequently used verbs.

  6. Ask the group to mark each word in the list that can be a verb as well as a noun (play, call, work, show, talk, support, change, etc.)

  7. Ask the group to mark all irregular verbs in the list and put the simple past form in brackets. (At this point you only need the simple past form, not the past participle.)

  8. Split the group into new pairs. Give everyone a list with a couple of addresses from the following ist:

Hey Ian and Torsten,

just a short summary of the last two days in Eilenburg.

MONDAY, 27 September 2010:

  • introduction (got to know each other)
  • we talked about the past weekend
  • grammar basics on simple present
  • grammar exercises on simple present ( grammar worksheet pages 6 to 10)
  • revision of numbers (as they told me that they’ve done this before)

All in all a very successful day, as the group is still highly motivated. It is real fun to work with them.

Tuesday, 28 September 2010:

  • revision of simple present
  • as they wanted to talk more they had to explain some words
  • difference between much/ many, some/ any, since/ for, who/which/whose (as they were asking for it)

A really intensive day. They’re working really hard. I think they’re all making progress.

Many regards

M

Ian

Hey Ian,

hope you had some nice last days. I just want to give you a short report on what we did for the last 3 days in Eilenburg.

MONDAY: 4 October 2010

  • we did a little dialog on students weekend activities
  • I explained the differences between much and many also some and any
  • also we did some exercise on that topic
  • we read through the song ’ Milow- You don’t know’
  • after that we translated it within the group

TUESDAY: 5 October 2010

  • the class had to do a short dialog on the past evening activities
  • I introduced the topic ‘giving directions’ therefor they were handed out a little word list containing the most important phrases regarding ‘finding and asking for the way’
  • also we did some exercises on that - the students got a little map where they had to describe how to get to some buildings shown in the map
  • exercise regarding the differences between who/which/whose

WEDNESDAY: 6 October 2010

  • as we have a new student in class we did some dialogs on getting to know each other
  • the new student’s name is Dorothee, she has some basic English knowledge and understands simple phrases and some easy vocabulary, and she is very motivated to learn English
  • we did a short dialog on the past evening activities
  • I introduced the ordinal numbers (1st; 2nd; 3rd…)
  • we did some spelling activities (business addresses and telephone numbers)

Well, that’s a short rundown so far on what we did the past 3 days. As it was my last day with this group I again have to say that it was always much fun to work with this group as they’re still highly motivated. I think they’ve been making great progress up until now.

Ian, unfortunatelly I didn’t have the opportunity to copy all the worksheets and exercise pages for our new student. I gave her just some of the things I did with the group so far. I hope it’ll be no problem for you to hand out some material to her.

All in all, I wish you good luck for the next few days with this group. As I will begin my university studies next week I won’t think that we’ll have the possibility to meet up again within the next time to discuss the progress. Therefore I wish you the best. Hope we hear from each other very soon.

Many thanks
M

Thanks Markus,

Good luck with the university!!

Best wishes.
Ian
