1b. The car ahead of me stopped suddenly and I had to brake.
2a. The bus stops right in front of our house.
2b. The bus stops right ahead of our house.
3a. We have some hard work ahead of us.
3b. We have some hard work in front of us.

This sentence is not correct. You cannot use ‘ahead’ here. All the others are possible, though 3b would be unlikely in comparison to 3a.
