I'm sorry for not writing to you sooner vs. ... for not writing you sooner

Hi all,

(a) Dear Cathy, I’m terribly sorry for not writing to you sooner.
(b) Every week, he wrote me a letter.

I wonder, is the use of “to” not necessary with the verb “to write”? In other words, is it correct to say “Dear Cathy, I’m terribly sorry for not writing you sooner” as well?

Thanks in advance. Ciao

In BrE, the ‘to’ is included (or alternatively, the ‘you’ is omitted: I’m sorry for not writing sooner.")
I believe the ‘to’ is optional in AmE.

(b) is natural as written, but a perfectly acceptable alternative would be:
Every week, he wrote a letter to me.

Hi Bev,

So “Every week, he wrote to me a letter”, would sound very odd, even though is grammatically correct, isn’t it?

I wouldn’t consider that to be grammatically correct.

Every week he wrote me a letter.
Every week he wrote a letter (to me).

Alright. Thanks a lot.
