If I were you vs. if I was you

Hi!I’m just confused about this. Why do we say, “If I were you” and not, “If I was you”?

.
Actually, many people do say ‘if I was you’, but ‘if I were you’ is still considered the correct form. It is one of the uses of the subjunctive mood: in if-clauses indicating a condition which is contrary to fact (I am not in fact you).

Hi chocolatee,

You might like to read the material I wrote for the site on the subjunctive here:

Hi! Thank you for the explanation. It was very informative and helpful to me. The story was very funny. I just have one more question though. In the story, there’s a phrase “If need be”. I didn’t know we could say this phrase. What does it mean? Were there words omitted in the phrase? Thanks.

Hi chocolatee,

If need be is another example of the present subjunctive and means if that should be necessary.

Dear Torsten ,
I have studied , ‘if I was you’ is grammaticality incorrect , should not use.
‘if I were you’ is the correct form.
similarly if he were …etc.
Please correct me.

.
If I was you is very casual, Kareem, and should be saved for conversation. You can use If I were you in any situation.
.

Dear Alan,

Thank you for the topic.

And thanks for Mr.Torsten for this link.

Thus, we should use 'if I were" , but even if we used “if I was”, it wouldn’t be incorrect!!!
