I want to take the chair.
- Would you mind if I take this chair?
- Would you mind if I took this chair?
Which question is correct?
Please elaborate.
Thanks.
I want to take the chair.
If you are using ‘would you mind …’ you need ‘took’.
You should use ‘take’ with ‘do you mind …’.
Hi Allifathima,
You have already received an EXCELLENT answer from the moderator.
May I add something that might interest you:
*Would you mind + gerund.../if I + verb in present or past?
Would you mind opening the window?
Would you mind if I open/opened the window?
*Grammar practice for upper intermediate students by Elaine Walker and Steve Elsworth, page 107.
Also, according to Understanding and Using English Grammar by Betty Azar, sometimes in informal spoken English, the simple present is used:
Would you mind if I close the window?
Thanks
