I want to take the chair.

  1. Would you mind if I take this chair?
  2. Would you mind if I took this chair?
    Which question is correct?
    Please elaborate.

If you are using ‘would you mind …’ you need ‘took’.
You should use ‘take’ with ‘do you mind …’.

May I add something that might interest you:

*Would you mind +  gerund.../if I + verb in present or past?

 Would you mind opening the window?
Would you mind if I open/opened the window?

Also, according to [i]Understanding and Using English Grammar[/i] by Betty Azar, sometimes in informal spoken English, the simple present is used:

   Would you mind if I close the window?
