If either of my brothers wins the race, I will be happy.

Hi!

If either of my brothers … the race, I will be happy.

a) wins
b) win

Which version(s) is/are correct? If there is more than one correct answer,
which one is the most correct from strict grammatical point of view?

If either of my brothers wins the race, I will be happy.

Dear Teacher!

Is plural verb “win” informally acceptable in this case?

I would use ‘win’ there because ‘either of’ indicates one person winning.

Dear DEACHERS!!!

Is plural verb also acceptable and considered more informal in this case?

Many thanks...

That is also possible, if you wish to refer to the plural ‘brothers’, rather than the singular ‘either (one) of’.
