The Big Apple is New York City, not the State of New York.

sorry I can’t understand what you mean!
The Big apple is New York, what’s wrong?
If I mentioned (USA), I mean that this idiom is used in the U.S.A

New York City is in New York State in the same way as the City of Tehrân is in Tehrân Province.

There are other cities other than the city of New York in New York State.
There are other cities (e.g. Karaj) other than the city of Tehrân in Tehrân Province.

Only New York City is known as the Big Apple, not the entire state of New York.
That’s what Tofu was getting at.

Most people would say exactly the same as you did - New York - the Big Apple. They would assume you meant the City and not the State. Tofu was being more precise.

  1. the big apple
  2. the Big Apple

#1 mean a specific big apple, and #2 means New York City, doesn’t it?

Yes, unless number 2 is a title for a story or essay, in which case the capitals are required as part of the title style.

Hi B.
thanks for your help. I really mean New York City.
I wonder you mentioned karaj ! Do you know I live in karaj ?!!
