What does the phrase “for the world” mean, please? I found the phrase when I was doing the TOEIC listening test of English-test.net.
Here is an extract of the text:
1). Are you coming to the office party next week?
A. Most people don’t really take their jobs very seriously, do they?
B. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. It’s usually great fun. – CORRECT
C. I suppose most people will have too much to drink.
‘I wouldn’t miss it for the world’ suggests that you certainly would never miss it. It is a very strong assurance that in this case it is not at all possible or likely that you would miss it. Another use could be: I wouldn’t hurt you for the world - meaning in no way would I hurt you/upset you.
Thank you so much for your explanation. Otherwise, I would still be at a loss for an answer to such an unusual statement—“I wouldn’t miss it for the world”.
