I only had a few drinks vs. I had only a few drinks

Hi,

- You didn’t go to the Red Lion, did you?

 • I’m afraid I did. But I only had a few drinks, honestly.

About the last sentence, can I say “… I had only a few drinks, honestly”? If so, would the meaning be the same?

Thanks in advance. Bye

It doesn’t sound as natural.

Francis,

The question you have to ask yourself is what you want ‘only’ to qualify. You could qualify ‘had’ by saying ‘I only had.’ Or if you want to qualify ‘a few drinks’, then you would precede that with ‘only’.

Thanks a lot.
