I need a good grammar book

Hi, I’ve been thinking about buying an additional grammar book. Could you please advise me on what book to buy? I want a book that has many exercises with mixed tenses (gapped texts with verbs in brackets, all tenses). I already have two grammar books but there are only 2 or maybe 3 exercises with mixed tenses and that’s far from enough. Thank you.

The best grammar books do not usually contain exercises. You would do better to avail yourself of the many internet websites, which contain exercises on all points of grammar.

Well, I’ve been looking for that for a few days now but no result. You know, there are only exercises with one sentence and these are usually really easy since there’s always an obvious tense indicator. That’s way too easy.

IMHO:

(1) I most respectfully suggest that you check out (at a good bookstore or on the Web) a series of books entitled GRAMMAR IN USE by Mr. Raymond Murphy. They may just be your cup of tea.

(2) I have an old edition (1990). But I think (can’t say for sure) that his newer editions follow the same format: nice clear explanations (with drawings) on one page; dozens (yes! dozens!) of exercises on the next page. And here is the really good news: I think (repeat: think) that you can now buy an edition with or without the answers! (Of course, I personally would prefer the edition with the answers to the exercises!)

(3) I also think that the newer editions contain CD’s for listening practice.

(4) I do not know what your level of English is, but I think that he has books for various levels.

(5) Hopefully, some of the people who have the newer editions will give you their opinions about Mr. Murphy’s book. I give it five stars out of five. Let’s see how others rate it. Better still: why don’t you check it out and decide for yourself.

Yes, this is exactly what I have. Unfortunately there are only exercises with past tenses, future tenses, etc separately. My final exams will be B2 level though.

IMHO:

(1) I guess that you already know about these books: (a) Longman English Grammar, (b) Practical English Usage (Michael Swan), and © Practice Exercises in Everyday English for Advanced Foreign Students by Robert J. Dixson. Hundreds of exercises, BUT no answers! (At least not in my 1957 edition!) This MAY be the book you are looking for. Check it out at a bookstore or the Web. It’s REALLY good. I think that he has written books for elementary and intermediate students, too. You might find one of his books to be just what you have been looking for.

(2) As Mr. Micawber said, check out the Web.

(3) Hopefully, other members may know about books with exercises. (P.S. Maybe you can tell us what material is covered in level B2 English.)

Good luck!

Thank you, I will check them out.
Level B2… All tenses I believe? There’s more but I don’t need to practise it. Just tenses… past, future, present, time clauses.

I know a series of books that I introduce them to you here:
Basic Grammar in use
Intermediate Grammar in use
Advanced Grammar in use

these are published by Cambridge publication Co.

Good Luck!

Hi, I am also taking TOEFL test this month. The best way to improve your grammar is to practice it in writing essays more and more. Then, check your essay by some instant grammar checker like “white smoke”. It will really help you as it helps me a lot. I hope it works for u. best of luck and pray for my good score as well.

Hey, that’s a good idea, thank you. Good luck on your TOEFL exam. ^^

Cerise, in my, a learner opinion, you should try

A Practical English Grammar Exercises 1 and
A Practical English Grammar Exercises 2

by A.J. Thomson and A.V. Martinet.

What I would like to know is that somebody let me know the author’s first names. Thanks

I’ve found most of the names:

Audrey Jean Thomson & Agnes V. Martinet

Hi,

Years ago a friend told me he had met these two authors and described them as sweet little okd ladies. Endearing really, isn’t it? Anyhow I still treasure my copy of their Modern English Grammar, which I have had since 1971.

Alan

If they’re okd by you, then they’re okd by me, Alan!

Hey, thank you sooo much. ^^ I think A Practical English Grammar Exercises 1 and A Practical English Grammar Exercises 2 are what I’ve been looking for.
