"I came back there" or "I went back there"

Which one is correct?

“I came back there” or “I went back there”

Also,
“You came back there” or “You went back there”

Does “came back” work with the word “here” and not with “there”?
Such as:

“You came back here”
“I came back here”

“I came back there” or “I went back there” --> “I came back there” is correct

“You came back there” or “You went back there” --> “You came back there” is correct

“came back” works with both of them. It depends on the context. For example, when you talk about another place far from where you are standing, then use “there”. But when you talk about the place you are standing, then use “here”.

E.g:

  • I came back to Alaska. (I’m standing at Alabama) --> I came back there.
  • I came back to Alabama. (I’m standing at Alabama) --> I came back here.

Palabattle - …yes, ok, …but depends heavily on the context.

It would certainly be more normal to say ‘come back here’ and ‘go back there’.

The only context I can think of where I would say ‘come back there’ in that context is if talking to someone (from there) by phone etc.
Sorry Mum, I can’t make it home for Xmas and I don’t want to come back there just for New Year’s Eve.”

(“I went on holiday and when I came back there was a new president” - but that is a different situation and use of ‘there’)

Uhm, just because I have a little bit doubt in this context, then I just choose one of them. It is ok, thank too much Mr. Thredder
