Hi,
I always was convinced that the “ou” within “youth” was to pronounce like the “ow” in “brown”. Now in a commercial they spoke it like the “ou” in “you”. Can anyone please help me out of my confusion?
Thanks in advance,
Michael

Hi Legend,
thanks for your reply. But how about South then? How would you pronounce th “…ou…” there?
Hi Foah,
Life’s complicated, I’m afraid. You would pronounce the ‘ou’ in ‘youth’ as you would say the ‘ou’ in ‘you’. With ‘south’ and ‘mouth’ the ‘ou’ is pronounced to rhyme with ‘ow’ in ‘cow’.

Oh my God,
I yet were happy if I had got the language´s rules, not to talk about those of life. lol
I guess there is no rule how to deal with the pronunciation, is there?
Anyway, thank you for clarification to Legend and Alan.
Michael
As Alan has pointed out, the letter combination ‘ou’ is pronounced in a number of different ways depending on the word they occur in:

Yes Sir,
I found four, the number. From what I´m told it is pronounced like the preposition for. Just in case I pronounced it right.
Hi Foah,
Yes you’re right it is ‘four’ like ‘your’.

Hi again,
another interesting point, now, was to to know how shoe is spoken out.
