How do you pronounce 'innovative'?

Do you pronounce ‘innovative’ the British or the American way?

Hello everyone,

How do you pronounce innovative? Is it ‘ɪnəveɪtɪv’ or do you stress the second syllable: innovative? (pronouncing the ‘a’ as a diphthong)

In other words, which syllable do you pronounce – the second (British) or the third (American)?

Thanks,
Torsten[YSaerTTEW443543]

Interesting-- I just heard Peter Mandelson today on CNN pronounce it with the stress on the first syllable. I didn’t know that there was a cross-pond difference with that word. I think your MP3 speaker is mistaken-- he is stressing the 1st syllable too for his BrE pronunciation.

(I stress the 3rd: /vei/)

Hi Charles,

You are right – many British people say innovative so they stress the first syllable not the second.

Thanks,

Hi Torsten and everyone,

I tried to record my voice. But it doesn’t work at this moment. I read the Voice recorder instructions and I also could record my voice for one time at least. Also, I can hear the voice that someones left as well. So I’m thinking if Voice recorder doesn’t work time to time? Then I don’t need to try this future again and again until it works. Thanks for helping me in advnace.

Bye the way, the error message is “[color=blue]javascript:void(0);” of Javascript programs.

Maggie

I never thought about it. In India both kind of accents are used so, we don’t care which one we are using. It may be clear when we speak, but we don’t differentiate between them.

well let’s see.

[size=150]Hello Maggie,

What happens when you click on the red record button? You should see the following:[/size]

[size=150]How to record your voice message:

  1. Click on the red round button and start to speak.
  2. To stop the recording click on the blue square button.
  3. Click on the “Send” button when you are finished.

Hello Slava, I am afraid that I’m facing the same problem as Maggie. After I clicked on the record button, nothing happens. I can’t see online recorder.

Hello Infin1ty,

The same problem occurs to me; however, I simply press SHIFT and then click on the ‘Record’ button. A new window pops up. It contains an error, but the applet has now loaded successfully in the initial window.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dimitar,

What browser do you use?[YSaerTTEW443543]

Thank you all, currently I am using Internet Explorer6 as my default browser. After I have downloaded and installed the java software that is offered by this site: java.com and press SHIFT while clicking on the record button as you suggested, the online recorder finally works.

Hey Torsten,

I use Opera, but to record voice messages I use IE. This is because my Opera doesn’t seem to be capable of performing this task.

Hi Dimitar, which version?[YSaerTTEW443543]

TOEIC listening, photographs: A keep fit class[YSaerTTEW443543]

Opera - 9.62; IE - 6.0.

Oops, it seems that there’s still a problem with my recorder. The voice message I sent is not as clear as it used to be (before I sent it out, it was clear). :frowning:

Hi Infin1ty,

Can you please keep your voice message on the forum as it is so Phil Burks, the CEO of the company that has created our online voice recorder can tell us what we should do to improve it?

Thanks a lot,
Torsten[YSaerTTEW443543]

Hi Torsten, no problem, I won’t delete my voice message again. I am somewhat disappointed with my first and second voice messages. :frowning:

It’s not your fault but rather a technical issue which I’m sure we can solve.[YSaerTTEW443543]

I recorded a sound and uploaded it. It sounded OK when played back.

But the sound recorded by Infin1ty is definitely mangled. I have not heard a recording like that.

We use Speex compression to reduce the size of the file. It is designed to work with human voice. If there is music playing in the background then it will sound very bad. Perhaps there was a noise in the background when Infin1ty recorded his message that confused the Speex encoder. I seems to hear a buzzing that is as loud as the voice.

Infin1ty, could you please try to record a message using a different microphone in a quiet place? I would like to know if that works better.

I see that Torsten has already set the frameRate to “16000” and the speexQuality to “4”. That should be pretty clean. So I suspect that the original recording was noisy.

Hi everyone,

I can record my voice right now. I just change my browser to Firefox only. I guess the problem probably is the setup of the Internet explorer. Maybe I’ll try to setup it when available. Thanks for helping me.

Maggie
