How do you do?

Hello,

I have learned that the expression “How do you do” is a very formal way of greeting. Not much used nowadays in everyday language.

I would like to know if the question “How do you do?” meaning “How are you?” is correct and if it is ever used.

Thank you.

‘How do you do’ is rarely used these days and means ‘pleased to meet you’. It doesn’t mean ‘how are you’ any longer.[YSaerTTEW443543]

Thank you for your answer.

I understand by what you say that there was a time when people used to use this expression as a synonym for "How are you? Have I understood well?

Yes, I believe it changed about 100 years ago.[YSaerTTEW443543]
