How can I improve my vocabulary?

Could you tell me something about How can I improve my vocabulary?

If you tell me,I will thank you indeed.

read books, talk english as much as you can, ask for clarification when needed.

read, read ,read, read; things you like and enjoy(in English of course (I don’t know why, but I have this nasty habit, I always have to state the obvious))
Watch telly (in English) and here’s my advice for everyone who enjoys British humor:

Monty Pythons and his Flying Circusssss

You can watch all the Episodes with winamp, provided you got sufficient bandwith.
–>Media Library -->internet TV -->retrieve List → saltwaterchimp.com/monty pythons

You might have to wait a little bit, unless you are a member, by the way I always put winamp on repeat.
In case you don’t like monty pythons – get lost!

or choose one of the other programms like simpsons and futurama.

Television from all over the world
mediahopper.com/portal.htm

listen to radio:
the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, radio bbc4
bbc.co.uk/radio4/

I think it depends on the kind of word.s
for example if you want to know many words you should join an english club and read books and talk in english.
but if you want to know scientific words you should buy a special dictionary and enter scientific sites.

hi

can any one please suggest me how to improve vocabulary?

thank you
laxmi

Read, read, read-- that is the prime vocabulary builder.

Dotti, I like your sense of humour, but I absolutely hate Monty Python. It’s rubbish.

Kitos… OK, I’ll get me coat.

Anything is better than the ‘Simpsons’.

And I have a soft spot for Michael Palin.

Hi,

at first I apologize for my mistakes, my english ist terrible…

I would like learn at first a few (important) vocabularies. Have somebody a list with the important vocabularies, if possible in German-English??

Thanks

An impossible question, Canooo, sorry. Important for whom? In what situation? Any language textbook starts with the basic vocabulary and grammar structures. Do you not have a text book?

hey all,
I think all of us struggle with english everyday… That’s what we are here for…
But I had made a promise to myself to improve my English so for that I have been trying to learn as many new words as possible like 60 new words everyday and now I have added almost 3500 new words to my vocabulary… But I think doing 5 to 10 words everyday would do wonders for many… so start today it really helps…

  1. Read a lot.
  2. Find new words (at least 5) and note them down with their meaning.
  3. Revise them every few days so as not to forget them.
    Enjoy…!!!

Hey,
I have maintained a regular habit of making my flash cards on which I keep on adding new words everyday… Just try learning at least 5 new words everyday, add them to your flash cards… keep on revising on the go anywhere coz u can keep them in your pocket… Coz I revise them whenever go for long walks or on a hike…
Reading a lot is the key… or just open dictionary and randomly find 5 words…
The key is… just do it everyday and revise them regularly…

Hello Everybody,

I have complete agree. the only way to improve your vocabulary is to get read, watch English new channel and capture new words.
once the words are captured ratther than focussing only on the word, if the word is learnt with a complete sentence it is more efective.

What do u say?

I have a list of word that i have come across

Hither
Rendezvous
muddle
stride

James could you come hither.
This friday night i have a rendezvous with my school friends.
John muddled the documents due to work pressure.
Clara it looks like you taking a great strides in getting your projects completed.

If someone could correct me that would be great…

Thanks
musk

I completely agree…
we should also focus on the usage of the word that really helps get to the gist of it…

James could you come here. – ‘Hither’ is no longer used in modern English except for a few set phrases: ‘hither and yon’, ‘a come-hither look’.

This Friday night I’m meeting my school friends.-- ‘Rendezvous’ is also seldom used, and when it is (and often jocularly), it is used to suggest a romantic or emotional meeting.

John muddled the documents due to work pressure.– Not common, but possible, I suppose. ‘Muddled up’ would sound more natural to me.

Clara, it looks like you’ve made great strides in getting your projects completed.

If u wanna improve ur vocabulary, i think u should learn all word that u have learned and reading the newspaper more, newspaper includes 2 languages (English and your native language). Ok?

Is it possible to go through with? In case we have too much time on our hands, it could be, though.

On second thoughts, let me rephrase it. Wouldn’t it be impossible for all ESL learners to be able to maintain all the words, whose they learn, as positive words, even if we gave it our best shot? That’s the bottom line.

Find the word family works well.
You can konw 10 more words by the roots and their derivatives sometimes.
It is also very interesting to konw the connection among words.
When comes to the words having various meanings, the different meanings can explain each other in some extent ,just like two or people who have something familiar in mind living in a house .
Expanding vocabularies is a happy way if you want to explore.
