"hopefully" vs "i hope"

Hi all,

I got this statement when getting along with Google.com about “hopefully” and “i hope”:

Incorrect: Hopefully, they will come in time.

Correct: I hope they will come in time.

I’ve heard both many times during speaking with some native speakers and I’ve also used both.

How do you think?

Hi Sunflower.baby

I am sure you have heard both versions. The American Heritage Dictionary contains some very good usage notes. Even though the way you used “hopefully” in your first sentence is widespread in informal English, that use of the word “hopefully” is frequently not accepted in formal English – as explained in the AHD usage note below.

I use “hopefully” the way you used it in your first sentence on a regular basis. However, if I were to write something in extremely formal English, I would avoid this usage.
