Historic vs. historical

Hello, what is the difference between historic and historical? I remember of the two means ‘very important’ and is used to describe an event that has happened very recently. Is that correct? If so which one is it? Thanks.

Historic refers to an event of significance, and it may but need not be in the near past-- it can be at any time.

The G7 leaders had/will have an historic meeting in Moscow in 1991/2005/2007.

Historical is the adjective of history.

An historical novel is fiction in a background of real history.
