“All that drink has addled his brains!”
Why does it say “brains” instead of “brain”?
Thank you.

Did you try a DICTIONARY first, Kapcha?
Brain 3. Sometimes, brains. (used with a plural verb) understanding; intellectual power; intelligence.
Thank you Mister Micawber.
Yes I did. I had already looked it up in a couple of my dictionaries. I know its meaning.
I’m just wondering why can’t we say “All that drink has addled his brain” while the noun “brain” in both singular and plural forms can be used to refer to intelligence (at least in British English)?
That’s not what your question asked, Kapcha. You asked why ‘brains’ was used. You can use either, as the dictionary states.
You’re right, I could’ve made my question more clear.
Thanks for your helpful answers.
