Helping or Helped?

Hi,

I read it from newspaper:

Indonesians after all have risen against their leaders before, as recently as 1998 when public revolt helping to drive out Suharto.

My question is “when” is an adverb clause, why after the public revolt (subject), there is a participle (helping) instead of helped (verb)?

Thanks

If I understand your question, you need not a complete clause after “While/When” all the time when they are using as “adverb” instead of “conjunction”.

Please take a help from the oxford dictionary.
