help on OALD (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

Hi everyone, I know that there are many people here using Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary.
I’m having trouble with it.

I was using it smoothly when suddenly my computer crashed. After restarting the computer, I can’t run the OALD. A cold message appeared: “oald7.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”

I tried several times but failed. I reinstall OALD several times, but it doesn’t work. I try getting rid of every trace of OALD on my computer, and then reinstall, but it doesn’t work.

WHat can I do now ? OALD is my life … :((

Well, it’s hard to say what might be the reason (depends on what might have happened at the time of the crash - probably some system .dll files were lost/corrupted), but if I were you, I’d reinstall the operating system.

Hi,

You ahve already tried reinstalling OALD so I would not suggest you to do that over and again.

But try this method:

Run the setup file and install the software on a different partition of your hard disk.

If that doesn’t work then you have to reinstall your Operating System. But before doing that, take the backups of your important files/folders and programs that you have saved on the same partion that your OS is intalled on.

I know that it is a time consuming task but if you want to be able to use the software then you have to do that. You can also contact the software vendor or the support team on its website.

How does that help ?

No need in taking that extra step. A reinstallation process won’t format your drive  In fact it won’t even damage your desktop files.

Come off it! I’m begging you, don’t be ridiculous. It never works out with those support team hints. They never give you the right advice providing that you’d be able to get through to them (well, sometimes they can give you the right hint, but I’m telling you this is not the case where they can advise anything worth applying)

Hey Lost_Soul!

I would like to say “sorry”. Please, pardon me.

But befor you go to sleep tonight, try reinstalling Windows by booting from the CD ROM and selecting the first partition of your hard disk for formatting on which Windows is to be reinstalled. And then let me know if you see the same desktop again…? OKay?

If you see the same desktop then you can be sure of that the program OALD will not still work! Just try it!

Good day!

Gopal.

Hi, Indiansoil

Nobody forses you to choose the formatting option. Installing windows (I’m talking about Winows 2000/XP/2003/Vista) might be performed with preserving the old file system.
Of course, if you choose to format the partition, your data will be lost :).

That sounds strange… But you know better, as I can see. I’ve never had that program.

Hi Lost_Soul,

How are you doing? By the way, what do you do?

Hi!!!
I had the same problem with OALD installation as you said above. I had tried to reinstall many times and in different portions, but the message “oald7.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.” was still persistent. I really felt desperate with this uncomfortable problem for a long times.

Accidentally I searched the Internet, I found this forum. And you were in the same situation like me. I sympathize with you much. But THIS FORUM DOES NOT HAVE ANY CORRECT SOLUTION for the problem.

And here my final solution that I tried and it worked much well:

PLEASE VISIT THIS SITE AND FOLLOW IT:www.oup.com/elt/catalogue/teachersites/oald7/cdrom?cc=global

Please try Lingoes, a free-ware… you can install as many dictionaries as you want from this website also…

lingoes.net/en/translator/download.htm
lingoes.net/en/dictionary/index.html

Oxford dictionaries are available as well, I think… Unless using Cambridge is good enough!
