‘The school of hard knocks’ refers to tough experiences you encounter as you go through life, which help to develop your character. ‘It would be unusual to use ‘swimming through’ with this expression… It would be more commonly expressed like this- You can tell by the strained look on his face that he’s been through the school of hard knocks.

This sounds to me like a failed attempt at humor by mixing metaphors. Something like “swimming with the sharks through the School of Hard Knox” would make a little sense, but still not be good.
