He was vs. He were

Hi there!
I’d like to know if “were” is also used in the conditional when talking about “he” or “she”. I know you could say something like, “if I were you I would be on time”. But what about this, If he were me he wouldn’t dare. In addition, is it ok to say “If I were him/her/them”. This is just for checkin’, thanks a lot…

It’s completely right.

Although using was is common conversation, it is grammatically incorrect.

So your sentence is correct, and the opposite (If he was me…) would be incorrect.

I think this rule is Irregular

If I were you If he were me …etc

We use were here as a part of subjunctive mood and that’s always the better of the two. Was is not incorrect seriously but I suggest not using it when doing your exams.

The correct form is If he were I,…
This can never be true. Hence, we need to use the subjunctive. Therefore,the form of the verb to be is were, irrespective of the subject.
The nominative ‘He’ goes before ‘were’ and hence the nominative ‘I’ comes after it.
