ISSUE: How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.
In my point of view, a better society should include the people of better quality, the more advanced technology and the well preserved culture, all of which depends greatly on the future generation–children. The way we raise our children is different among countries to countries, and it is very difficult to judge which is better, however, one thing for sure is that the new generation is definitely better than the old one.
Nowadays, children become much more open-minded, tolerant and respectful after the socialization process, due to the totally different political system and the fast developed globalization. In the last century, people are separated according to different classes both in western and eastern countries. Under this kind of atmosphere, children who born in poor families mostly grew in diffident, shy and self-abased, while children who born in wealthy families almost grew in arrogant, mean and self-centered. However, with the abolition of class discrimination, children are taught that everyone is born equal, which let them become more respectful and kind; with the development of internet, children have more opportunities to know the outside world which cultivated their personalities of tolerance. Living in the harmonized contemporary, we are more capable of cultivating our children with sound and perfect personalities.
We are now surrounded by high-tech equipments, such as computers, televisions, cars, and so on, which were all invented by those brilliant scientists in recent years. This great achievement should primarily contribute to the successful education method that accept and respect those fantasy theories which are different from the general understanding. Copernicus’s heliocentric model and Darwin’s evolutionary theory were all regarded as nonsense, and they were even despised when first published, while Hawking’s black hole theory received great honor even it is just based on calculation and logic. We now realized that it is very important to encourage children’s innovation, stimulate their creativity and help them to make the so-called dream come true. Leaded by this education principle, children are more brave and imaginative than they used to be.
Passing on and flourishing the traditional culture is also a vital part of socialization. And people today put greater emphasis on the history education compared with the past. For China as an example, she was weak and vulnerable 50 years ago, in order to develop herself, she almost abandoned all the old tradition and just simply follow the western countries. But recent decades, this phenomenon was totally changed. Now, Chinese government pays attention to the history education and takes culture preservation seriously, which can also be seen in other western countries, like United States, Canada and so on. Through the culture-highlighted education, children learn more about the history of their own country which help them to better pass on the old civilization.
Children are now raised under a more harmonized society, encouraged to explore and imagine the unknown world, and leaded to learn more about the old tradition. However, there are still some demerits in the contemporary socialization process. Because of the modern technology, the youngs put more time on the artificial interaction and computer games, other than face-to-face communication and outdoor exercises. This subhealthy living condition definitely has an adverse effect on physical and mental health, which cannot be denied and neglected.
In a conclusion, the development of the whole world is motivated by the new broad-minded generation. Although we do not know how to raise children who can bring us a best society, we do know how to cultivate them to build a better one.
