‘Grunt’ is usually used to describe the noise made by a pig. When used to suggest a way of speaking it has the sense of being gruff, terse and grumpy. It gives the idea that you are speaking as if you really can’t be bothered to speak. In your example it would either suggest agreement or reluctant approval of what somebody else has said,
