GRE TOPIC: “In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.”

The author’s view on the topic that “In order to improve quality of education at college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach” is completely agreeable. In today’s world, education imparted within the class-room premises is not enough for the student’s survival in his/her particular profession. The following arguments substantiate my point of view.

Firstly, staff inexperienced in the real-life situations of the subject they teach, impart nothing but text book content to their students. It is very obvious that this method is not only inefficient, but it is simply not enough in today’s highly demanding world. Moreover the text books they teach from will be a few years old. Therfore the faculty will be oblivious to what is currently happening, in the subject concerned. Teachers with no professional experience simply pass on the information that they have learnt from their predecessors and books that they might have read. Nevertheless that this is important, it is not sufficient for the student to realize his/her subject in the professional world.

Secondly, the reason that sets some universities apart form others is the quality of education imparted there. A university with a well stocked library is not sufficient to produce professionally savvy students. The faculty must have the efficacy to be able to train their students, in accordance with their profession. This is possible only when the teachers themselves do some research and training on their subject outside the class-room premises. This will not only broaden the thinking of the faculty but at the same time will enable them to impart more efficient knowledge on the subject, with relevance to current trends.

Concluding, faculty must be trained outside their classrooms in their respective subjects if they want to impart efficient and efficacious knowledge. The universities with this kind of faculty will set itself apart from the rest in terms of the quality of education recieved there.
