The following opinion was provided in a letter to the editor of a national aeronautics magazine: “Manned space flight is costly and dangerous. Moreover, the recent success of a series of unmanned space probes and satellites has demonstrated that a great deal of useful information can be gathered without the costs and risks associated with sending men and women into space. Therefore, we should invest our resources in unmanned space
The opinion provided mentions that manned space flight is costly and dangerous, Have there been any recent mishaps on a manned space flight? While it is mentioned that that manned space flight is costly and dangerous there is no mention of reliability. Maybe, Manned space flight is more reliable that may be the reason why they are costlier. If manned space flight is dangerous, Are the unmanned space probes and satellites less dangerous? Maybe, due to some technical failure if they stop functioning correctly and the control center loses control over the probe it may crash onto the earth’s surface which can be dangerous and may take lives if crashed into the area with a population.
If unmanned space probes and satellites can gather useful information,. Is that information more reliable, more accurate than the information gathered by manned space flight? Maybe, Manned space flights are launched in the first place because of higher success rates, reliability, and accuracy of information.
The unmanned space flight has less cost than manned space flight then why manned space flights are being sent? Maybe, the cost difference isn’t so large and hence insignificant. If there are fewer risks in unmanned space probes than sending men and women into space, It may be the case that there are other risks involved like losing the trajectory, colliding with other space objects, etc.
We should invest our resources in unmanned space flight but if the success rate is low than we shouldn’t waste much of our resources there and try to make manned space flight safer. As far as cost is concerned, safety is always a priority over the cost involved.
